iPhone app that turns real-life objects into 3D models now available on Android with improvements

Posted on June 22, 2023August 6, 2023 By Satish

Epic Games has recently launched its RealityScan app for both Android and iPhone users. The app, powered by the Unreal engine, is a photogrammetry app that allows users to create high-quality 3D models of objects using multiple pictures taken from smartphones or tablets. Previously only available for iPhone users, the app can now be downloaded on Android devices as well. Users can export these 3D models to Sketchfab for sharing with others, or download them for use in other applications like Unreal Engine or Twinmotion.

To access the RealityScan app on Android, users must have a device that supports ARCore and runs Android 7 or higher. iPhone and iPad users need their devices to run iOS 16 or higher.

The latest update of the RealityScan app on both platforms includes improvements to the user interface and workflow. The app now supports a step-based workflow that guides users through the scanning process, allowing them to go back and make changes if needed. Users can easily manage their projects by deleting or replacing images from the Project Library. Additionally, a new embedded Sketchfab viewer tool enables users to preview their final model directly from the Project Library. Users can also add a name and description to their projects, which will be automatically synchronized with Sketchfab.

In terms of integration with Sketchfab, Epic explains in a blog post that users can export their 3D models to Sketchfab for free. However, the number of models that can be uploaded per month depends on the user’s Sketchfab plan. For the first upload, users will be automatically upgraded to Sketchfab Pro for free for one year.

Since its initial release for iPhone users in 2022, the RealityScan app has seen over 200,000 downloads and has generated thousands of models that have been uploaded to Sketchfab by the community, according to Epic Games.
