Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has officially confirmed the launch of its new app called Threads on July 6. While the app was already listed on the App Store with a scheduled debut date, having an official announcement adds credibility to the development.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared the news on his Channel, stating that the text app, Threads, will be launched on Thursday. The goal is to create an open and civil platform for conversations. Mosseri expressed his excitement about getting the app into users’ hands and hearing their feedback.
Threads is expected to initially launch on iPhones, as it has already been listed on the App Store with screenshots of its iOS version. Reports also mentioned that the app briefly appeared on the Google Play Store over the weekend.
To receive a reminder for downloading the app upon its release, users can search for the term “Threads” on Instagram and tap on the red colored ticket in the search bar. A ticket will appear, indicating that the app will go live at 7:30 PM (time zone not specified).
According to a report by The Information, Threads will be a standalone app based on Instagram, featuring integration with ActivityPub. This decentralized social networking protocol offers a client/server API for content creation, updating, and deletion.
The report further stated that Threads will allow users to migrate their accounts and followers to other apps that support ActivityPub. Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, mentioned that creators and public figures have shown interest in a reliable and well-managed platform for content distribution.
In addition, Meta is reportedly trying to enlist celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama to join the app.
